IRVINE, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i women's track and field team wrapped up the Steve Scott Invitational at UC Irvine's Anteater Track Stadium with one school record, four regional qualifiers, and 12 personal best performances during the two-day meet, which concluded on Sunday.
All-American high jumper
Amber Kaufman broke her own school record with a jump of 6-0.75 (1.85m) to finish behind Olympian Sharon Day, who also cleared the same height but made fewer misses than Kaufman. The jump is tied for the third best mark in the country this season. The previous school record was 6-0.5 (1.84m) set by Kaufman at last year's Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships.
Senior
Emily Sheppard also competed in the high jump and cleared the regional standard of 5-8.75 (1.75m) and finished in sixth place. During the two-day competition, Sheppard also set personal bests in the 100-meter hurdles (15.48 seconds) and long jump (18-7/5.66m).
Freshman
TeRina Keenan placed second in the discus with a regional qualifying throw of 159-4 (48.56m).
“This was probably the best team performance we've ever had at one meet,” said ninth-year head coach
Carmyn James. “With that many outstanding performances and especially at this meet, where we only had one regional qualifier last season, I'm really pleased with how it turned out. All in all it was a great week.”
Senior
Joy Saleapaga and sophomore
Samantha Lotnick each posted personal bests in a pair of events. Saleapaga had career marks in the 100-meter hurdles (17.29) and 400-meter hurdles (1:06.62), while Lotnick posted PRs in the 3000-meter steeplechase and 1500-meter run (5:08.88), the latter of which she chopped off eight seconds from her previous best.
