HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i women's water polo team faces UCLA in the first round of the 2009 MPSF Championship, as the Rainbow Wahine host the championship for the second time in school history, beginning Friday, April 24 at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex.
UH finished the season ranked fourth in the country with a 16-7 overall record and a 3-4 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation mark. The Rainbow Wahine earned the No. 6 seed in the tournament due to tiebreaker rules after finishing tied with California and San Jose State for fourth place.
The Bruins earned the No. 3 seed, finishing 20-5 overall and 5-2 in MPSF play. The match between UH and UCLA will begin at 4:30 p.m. on Friday at the DKAC.
The MPSF Championship kicks off on Friday with No. 2 seed Stanford facing No. 7 seed San Diego State at 3 p.m. Following the UH game, No. 1 seed USC faces No. 8 Arizona State at 6 p.m. and No. 4 California will play No. 5 San Jose State in the final match of the day at 7:30 p.m.
UH went 1-2 against UCLA this season, including the first ever victory over the Bruins on Feb. 7, 13-12 at the Stanford Invitational.
