BOISE, Idaho - The University of Hawai`i men's tennis team concluded Western Athletic Conference play with a significant 4-3 win over No. 66 Nevada, Saturday morning at the Appleton Tennis Complex. After playing over seven hours of tennis yesterday, the Warriors gave a valiant effort as they improved to 7-9 overall and 4-2 in the WAC play while the Wolfpack fall to 11-6 overall, 2-3 in the WAC.
The Warriors started off slowly, losing two of the three doubles matches to lose the point. The lone doubles win came from the duo of senior
Sascha Heinemann and sophomore
Craig Faulk at the No. 3 court as they squeezed past the team of Wessim Derbel and Gabe Kanzelmeyer, 8-6.
The Warriors fought back, winning four of the six singles matches to clinch the dual match victory. UH sophomore
Dennis Lajola earned a straight set win over Laurent Garcin at the No. 1 court. Freshman
Leo Rosenberg battled back after losing the first set to defeat Augustin Myard in three sets at the No. 3 court, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. Heinemann crushed Benjamin David, 6-3, 6-1, at the No. 4 position to earn his 10th straight singles victory. At the No. 6 court, freshman
Philipp Eberhard was clutch as he fought back and outlasted Kristian Kuharszky, 5-7, 7-5, 6-3.
The Warriors will next host the WAC Championships from April 23-26, at the UH Tennis Complex. UH, the 2008 WAC Champions, will be looking to defend their title at home.
