Men’s Tennis Overpowered By No. 19 Boise State

BOISE, Idaho - The University of Hawai`i men's tennnis team saw its three-match conference win streak halted with a 6-1 loss to No. 19 Boise State Friday at the Appleton Tennis Complex. The Warriors dropped to 6-9 overall and 3-2 in the Western Athletic Conference, while the Broncos improved to 20-7 and 5-0 in the WAC.

Just hours after defeating New Mexico State in a morning match, UH went down swinging against the Broncos in a contest that lasted more than four hours. Four singles matches went the distance and the contest concluded with an epic battle between Clancy Shields—ranked 26th nationally—and UH junior Andreas Weber. Shields ended up winning the three-set match in a super-tiebreaker 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (9-7). It was Weber's first loss in his last five decisions.

Boise State swept through doubles play to earn the first point of the day then won five of six singles matches to lock up the win. The Broncos won the top three positions with nationally ranked players Shields, No. 74 Kean Feeder and No. 82 James Meredith. UH, however, did get another outstanding performance from senior Sascha Heinemann who lost his first set before rallying for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 win at the No. 4 court. It was Heinemann's ninth straight singles victory.

The Warriors will conclude its regular season schedule in Boise where they will face Nevada in a WAC matchup on Saturday morning. First serve is set for 10:00 a.m. MT
