HONOLULU – The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (15-9) won both ends of a doubleheader over No. 18 Coastal Carolina (19-6), 5-4 and 7-1, in front of a crowd of 3,031 at Les Murakami Stadium Friday.
In the first game,
Sam Spangler (4-0) got the win while Tommy Winegardner (0-1) took the loss for Coastal.
Coastal Carolina got on the scoreboard first, posting two runs in the top of the second inning. The Chants looked to add to their lead, but UH starter
Jared Alexander induced a ground out with the bases loaded, keeping it at 2-0.
The Rainbows responded in the bottom of the inning as Jeffrey Van Doornum hit a RBI-single up the middle, shrinking the deficit to 2-1. Coastal turned right around to add another run in the top of the third, getting the lead to 3-1.
Christian Johnson singled in Morford in the fifth inning before Wong scored on a wild pitch in the sixth to tie the score at 3-3. But the Chants retook the lead in the seventh, scoring on a RBI-double by Adam Rice, giving CCU a 4-3 edge.
That was how it stayed until the bottom of the ninth. After Morford struck out to open the inning, Johnson and
Greg Garcia walked. Roquemore then hit a RBI-single to right, tying the score at 4-4. The Chants intentionally walked
Vinnie Catricala to load the bases for Kevin Macondald. Macdonald was then struck in the arm with the first pitch, bringing in Garcia for the game-winner.
Matt Sisto (3-1) picked up the win in game two, allowing one run in 5.0 innings. Bobby Gagg (2-2) took the loss for the Chants.
Catricala went 1-for-3 with a double, three RBI and a run while Wong was 2-for-3 with a run and a stolen base. Johnson added a 2-for-3 game with one RBI and a run while Morford went 1-for-3 with two runs, a stolen base and a double.
Hawai`i jumped ahead in the second inning, scoring two runs on an error, then an RBI-single by Johnson. UH added to the lead in the fifth as Catricala hit a two-out, two-run, double before scoring on an RBI single by Macdonald, making it 5-0.
The Chants scored a run in the sixth to cut it back to 5-1, only to see Roquemore and Catricala bring in two insurance runs in the bottom of the inning, pushing the Rainbows to the 7-1 victory in the scheduled seven-inning game.
The 'Bows will close out their series with Coastal Carolina tomorrow at 12:05 p.m. at Les Murakami Stadium.
