MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The No. 75 University of Hawai`i men's tennis team fell to No. 29 Wisconsin, 4-2, at the Blue Gray Tennis Classic Thursday at the Lagoon Park Tennis Center. The Warriors dropped to 2-5 with its fourth loss in the last five matches.
The Badgers won the doubles point with a pair of victories on the No. 1 and No. 3 courts, including a win by the duo of Moritz Baumann and Marek Michalick, the No. 17 ranked duo in the nation, over
Dennis Lajola and
Andreas Weber. Wisconsin then secured the match win with a sweep of the top three singles positions. The Badgers improved to 10-4 on the season and advanced to the championship bracket where they will face Alabama.
The Warriors got strong performances from its two seniors,
Sascha Heinemann and
Jeff Fitch. Heinemann took down Luke Rassow-Kantor, 6-2, 6-1 on the No. 4 court. Fitch, meanwhile, out-lasted Michael Dierberger, 7-6, 6-3 on the No. 5 court to earn UH's second point.
UH however fell at the No. 1, 2 and 3 courts with Wisconsin getting two of its wins on the back of ranked players Baumann and Michalicka. No. 36 Bauman defeated No. 75 Lajola 6-2, 6-0 on court No. 1, while No. 60 Michalicka downed Weber 6-4, 6-3 at court No. 2. Patrick Pholmann defeated UH's other ranked player, No. 84
Leo Rosenberg, 6-0, 6-4, at the No. 3 position.
The Warriors are back in action in the Blue Gray Classic on Friday, March 20 when they face Middle Tennessee State in the consolation bracket. First serve is set for 4:00 p.m. CT (11 a.m.HT) at the Lagoon Park Tennis Center.
