SAN JOSE, Calif. – The fourth-ranked University of Hawai'i women's water polo team lost its first match of the season Wednesday in overtime against No. 10 San Jose State, 10-8. The Rainbow Wahine (4-1) blew a five-goal lead heading into the final quarter.
Hawai'i started the match strong, keeping San Jose State (6-2) scoreless in the first quarter and holding a 7-2 lead by the end of the third period. However, the Spartans made a quick turnaround, sinking the Rainbow Wahine's lead with five goals and keeping UH at bay, forcing overtime with the score knotted at 7-7.
The Rainbow Wahine went scoreless in the first overtime period while the Spartans managed to put up two more goals, gaining a 9-7 lead. Although Hawai'i scored one goal in the match's final overtime period, the Spartans held on for a 10-8 victory.

Kelly Mason with four goals. As for the Spartans, Dani Curran and Kelli Stewart contributed three goals each in the upset.
Hawai'i will continue its road trip Feb. 6 against Stanford at 4:00 p.m. PST.
