HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine basketball team (2-4) picked up its first home win of the season, defeating the San Francisco Dons (3-5) 58-48 in front of a crowd of 1,528 at the Stan Sheriff Center Thursday.
The Dons came out firing, holding the lead for the first nine minutes of the game, with the biggest lead coming at 13-6 just over six minutes into the game. But UH answered with a huge 14-0 run, capped by a
Julita Bungaite three-pointer, putting the Rainbow Wahine ahead 20-13. Hawai'i held the lead the rest of the half, although USF made a late run to cut it back to a 29-27 deficit at the break.
UH then ran away with it in the second half, never relinquishing the lead again. An old-fashioned three-point play by Kanekoa with just under eight minutes left gave the Rainbow Wahine their first double-digit lead at 45-35. And Hawai'i would keep the wide margin the rest of the way, getting it as high as 56-41 before closing out the 58-48 victory.
The Hawai'i bench outscored USF's bench 26-7, while the Rainbow Wahine controlled the game mainly on the inside, outscoring the Dons 32-14 in the paint. UH also had a 44-27 advantage in rebounds to help the cause.
The Rainbow Wahine will now head to La'ie, O'ahu, for the Hukilau Invitational. UH will face BYU-Hawai'i tomorrow at 4 p.m., before playing Brigham Young on Saturday, at 1 p.m.
