Women’s Basketball Earns Exhibition Win Over Hawai’i Pacific

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team opened the season with a 73-70 overtime win over Hawai'i Pacific University in an exhibition game Wednesday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
 
UH began head coach Dana Takahara-Dias' first season with a thrilling win in front of 1,938 fans. The Rainbow Wahine bounced back in overtime to outscore the Sea Warriors 11-8, after HPU tied the game on a 3-pointer with 2.1 seconds left in regulation.
 
Overall UH had a balanced scoring attack, with four players in double figures. Keisha Kanekoa, Leilani Galdones and Rebecca Dew each had 12 points and Breanna Arbuckle added 11 points.
 
The Rainbow Wahine also had solid contributions from Allie Patterson, who scored eight points, Katie Wilson had seven points and Shawna Kuehu and Julita Bungaite each had five points.
 
In the first half, the Rainbow Wahine went back-and-forth with the Sea Warriors, pulling ahead at the end of the half 34-32. UH shot 47.8 percent from the field and 62.5 percent from 3-point range in the opening 20 minutes.
 
The offense was balanced in the first half for UH, with Arbuckle and Galdones with eight points each. Kanekoa had seven points and Bungaite had five points.
 
The Rainbow Wahine open the regular season on the road against UC Riverside on Nov. 17. UH will face UCLA on Nov. 19 and Cal State Bakersfield on Nov. 21 to conclude its three-game road trip.
 
UH's next home game will be in the Jack in the Box Rainbow Wahine Classic, against Arizona State on Nov. 27.
