Women’s Basketball Battles No. 17 Arizona State Tough In Loss

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team dropped the opening game of the Jack in the Box Rainbow Wahine Classic, 65-53 to No. 17 Arizona State Friday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
 
The Rainbow Wahine fall to 1-3 on the season, dropping their home opener. UH will face East Tennessee State in the final game of the classic on Sunday at 5 p.m.
 
Overall, Keisha Kanekoa led the way with 15 points, five rebounds and three steals and Shawna Kuehu had 13 points, eight rebounds and four blocks.
 
UH shot 55 percent from the field in the second half and had six blocks in the game. Breanna Arbuckle added nine points and four rebounds and Allie Patterson had six points and three rebounds.
 
In the first half, the Rainbow Wahine played aggressive defense and kept the game close, trailing 32-22 at the break. UH held Arizona State to 32.4 percent shooting and had five blocked shots.
 
Offensively, Kanekoa led the way, recording eight points and adding three rebounds and three blocks. Patterson had six points off the bench and Kuehu added five points. UH got to the free throw line 16 times, making 12 in the opening half.
 
The Jack in the Box Rainbow Wahine Classic continues Saturday, when Arizona State faces East Tennessee State at 2 p.m. UH wraps up the tournament on Sunday evening, facing East Tennessee State at 5 p.m.
