Men’s Tennis Opens Play at ITA Southwest Regionals

MALIBU, Calif. - The University of Hawai`i men's tennis team began play today in the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southwest Regional Tennis Championships on the grounds of Pepperdine University at their Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center in Malibu, Calif. 

There were three Rainbow Warriors in singles action today, Daniel Llarenas, Leo Rosenberg and Jeremy Tweedt. Also in action today was the doubles team of Dmytro Kovalyov and Philipp Eberhard.
 
In singles action, the Rainbow Warriors went one for three with Rosenberg leading the charge. Tweedt and Llarenas were in the fight till the end but fell short. Llarenas lost his match in three sets 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 against Nils Schive from the University of San Diego, meanwhile, Tweedt was defeated by Taylor Chavez from UC Santa Barbara 4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-4. Rosenberg the lone winner of the day won his match in straight sets against Ryan Mayer of UC Irvine 7-6 (2), 6-3. Rosenberg will continue play tomorrow against Andre Dome of Cal Poly.
 
The lone team in doubles action today, Kovalyov and Eberhard lost their match to Alex Konigsfeldt and Benjamin Recknagel of UCSB 8-3. Kovalyov and Eberhard still have to compete in singles portion of the tournament tomorrow. Kovalyov will play against Matt Brooklyn of UCLA who is ranked No. 39 by the ITA preseason rankings. Eberhard has a match against Max Glenn of UCSB.
 
The rest of the Rainbow Warriors will also begin play tomorrow in both singles and doubles matches. Andreas Weber will play Ravid Hazi from Arizona, Dennis Lajola will play against Geoff Embry from Arizona and Chad Rubin will have his first match of the year against Otto Sauer from Loyola Marymount.
 
Tomorrow's doubles action will have three teams representing Hawai'i. The teams of Lajola/Tweedt, Llarenas/Rubin and Rosenberg/Weber will compete. The team of Lajola and Tweedt will play Sebastian Bell and Rob Foy from Cal Poly, Rosenberg and Weber will play Otto Sauer and Borja Malet from Layola Marymount and the last team Llarenas and Rubin will play Nick Northcott and Gautam Vaidyanathan from UC Irvine.
 
The Rainbow Warriors have two players and one doubles team ranked in the ITA preseason rankings which came out on Sept. 4. Lajola is No. 43 and Weber is No. 119 in the singles rankings, while, the team of Lajola and Tweedt are ranked No. 49 in doubles.
