HONOLULU – The No. 55 University of Hawaii men's tennis team kicked off its 2009 spring campaign with a three-day round-robin tournament with No. 36 Kentucky at the UH Tennis Complex, Jan. 8-10.
Kentucky got the better of UH, with wins in 16 of 20 singles matches and seven of nine doubles matches. The Warriors, however, did have thier bright spots. The final day of action was highlighted by
Leo Rosenberg'sstraight-set upset of No. 37 Eric Quigley, 7-6, 7-6. It was the second straight competiton that the freshman has knocked off a ranked player. The native of Manhattan, Kan., also upset No. 66 Richard Wire of Stanford in November.
For the weekend, Rosenberg won two of three singles matches, while UH's top singles player, No. 55
Dennis Lajola split a pair of matches. Senior
Sascha Heinemann also took home a singles victory over Graeme Dyce on the second day of the tournament.
UH will next play Pac-10 powershouse and No. 25 California on Thursday, January 15. First serve is set for 1:00 p.m. at the UH Tennis Complex.
