WAIPAHU, O`ahu – The University of Hawai`i women's soccer team dropped their second game of the OHANA Hotels & Resorts No Ka Oi on Monday afternoon, falling to No. 23 Denver 2-1 at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium in front of 1,183 fans.
After battling to a scoreless tie in the first half, the Rainbow Wahine struck first in the second half, scoring 17 seconds in. Denver answered with the final two goals, dropping UH to 0-2 on the season.
Denver and Long Beach State both finished the OHANA Hotels & Resorts No Ka Oi with a 1-0-1 record. The two teams played to a 0-0 tie on Saturday night.
On Monday afternoon, UH opened the second half by stealing the kick off and
Mari Punzal took a shot on the right side that slipped past the goalkeeper and
Ambree Ako finished off the play on the other side.
The goal is the quickest goal to start the second half in UH history, passing Natasha Kai's goal 29 seconds into the second half against Boise State in 2002.
After the quick striking goal, the Pioneers rallied back, scoring their first goal of the game in the 56th minute of play. Denver took the lead in the 76th minute, improving to 3-0-1 on the season.
The Rainbow Wahine return to action Sept. 7, when they face Drake in the first game of the New Mexico Classic in Albuquerque, N.M. UH will face host New Mexico on Sept. 9.
