HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (23-25, 15-12 WAC) fell to the Sacramento State Hornets (20-26, 11-11) 7-3 in the second game of the doubleheader at Les Murakami Stadium Saturday.
Matthew Daly (5-3) took the loss while Brian Smith (3-1) got the win for Sacramento State.
Jeffrey Van Doornum was 2-for-4 with one RBI and a run while Kevin Macdonald added a 2-for-4 with one RBI. Jonathan Hee and Brandon Haislet also went 2-for-4, with Hee scoring a run.
The Hornets jumped on Daly early in the game as Wes Oberlin smacked a three-run home run to left, giving Sacramento State the 3-0 lead. Sacramento State added a run in the fourth before Daly walked in two more in the fifth, giving them a 6-0 advantage.
Hawai`i would give up another run in the top of the sixth before a RBI-double by Greg Garcia put the Rainbows on the scoreboard, down 7-1.
Cameron Wheeler took control for the rest of the game, holding the Hornets to just one run in 4.1 innings, striking out five with only three hits and no walks.
The 'Bows tried to mount a ninth-inning rally as the first four batters in the inning, Hee, Haislet, Van Doornum and Macdonald, had basehits. Van Doornum doubled down the rightfield line, bringing in Hee. Haislet was rounding the bases, and looked like he would easily score. But he tripped while rounding third, trapping him in a rundown that he eventually was caught in. Macdonald would drive in Van Doornum before Catricala hit into a double play, ending his 15-game hitting streak while also ending the game 7-3.
The two teams close out the series tomorrow with the final game at 1:05 p.m.
