Rhodes Pitches Complete-Game In UH's 3-1 Win Over Hornets

Box Score

HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (23-24, 15-11 WAC) defeated the Sacramento State Hornets (19-26, 10-11) 3-1 in the first game of a doubleheader at Les Murakami Stadium Saturday. Nicholas Rhodes (4-4) pitched a complete-game victory, allowing just one run on six hits. Trevor York (4-5) took the loss for Sacramento State.

Vinnie Catricala led the way offensively, going 3-for-4 with two RBI while extending his hitting streak to 15 games. Kevin Macdonald added a 3-for-4 game with a run while Jeffrey Van Doornum was 2-for-4 with two runs and a double.

Hawai`i had a great opportunity to score the game's first runs in the bottom of the fourth, loading the bases with just one out. But York was able to induce a double play ball to end the inning and keep the game scoreless.

The Hornets took advantage by scoring first in the top of the sixth, as David Flores drove in Taylor Watanabe to give them the 1-0 edge.

The Rainbows came right back in the bottom half of the inning. Van Doornum, Macdonald and Catricala had back-to-back-to-back singles to tie the score. Landon Hernandez later sacrificed in the go-ahead-run, giving Hawai`i the 2-1 lead.

That was all that Rhodes needed as he had the game in control throughout, allowing just one walk while striking out four. Catricala would give UH an insurance run in the eighth, driving in Van Doornum to give the 'Bows the 3-1 victory.

The second game of the doubleheader is scheduled to start at 4:10 p.m.
