No. 24 Hawai`i Sweeps Doubleheader Over Santa Clara, 3-0

Box Score

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The No. 24 University of Hawai`i softball team (33-14, 7-4 WAC) completed the doubleheader sweep of Santa Clara with a 3-0 win at Marsalli Park on a chilly afternoon. Kate Robinson (14-4, 4-1 WAC) earned the win with a complete game shut out, while Lauren Passafuime (0-4) took the loss for Santa Clara (9-43).

For Robinson it was her 18th complete game of the season and eighth shutout of the year. She scattered six hits and struck out three while walking no Santa Clara batters.

Passafuime threw well in her complete game loss. She gave up three early runs, but then settled down to eventually retire 11 batters in a row between the third and sixth innings. She gave up the three runs on six hits with a walk and three strike outs.

Hawai`i's Kaulana Gould scored the game's first run in the top of the first inning. She reached on an opposite field single through the leftside of the infield. Gould wasted not time and stole second to get into scoring position for Brandi Peiler, who followed with a sharp hit to the shortstop. The ball took a hard, high hop and bounced into left-centerfield for an RBI double that drove in Gould from second.

In the second, Richie-Anne Titcomb reached on a fielding error by the Santa Clara shortstop. A groundout to short pushed Titcomb to second and then she scored on an RBI single to right by Katie Grimes. Later, with two outs, Peiler picked up her second RBI of the game with a single to right that drove in a hustling Grimes from second.

Santa Clara made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh. Jeanine Ruffoni started the inning with a single to deep short. The next batter, Amanda Edmondson, hit into a fielder's choice with Hawai`i shortstop fielding the ground ball and stepping on second for the unassisted out. Jackie Nicora followed with another hit to center which put runners at first and second. Then, Noelani Ho'opi'i got a nice single to right that loaded the bases with one out for the Broncos. Hawai`i then got SCU's designated player, Jackie Morales, to ground into a 5-U-3 double play to end the game.

The doubleheader was the final non-conference, regular season games for the 'Bows. Hawai`i will bus out tomorrow and head for Fresno State where it will face the Bulldogs in a three game conference series starting on Friday, April 25.
