Men's Volleyball Falls In Three-Sets Against No. 5 Pepperdine

Box Score

MALIBU, Calif. -- The No. 13 University of Hawai`i men's volleyball (10-16, 7-14 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) had difficulty versus the No. 5 Pepperdine Waves (13-9, 12-9 MPSF) and lost in three sets, 31-29, 30-25, 30-17, Friday night at the Firestone Fieldhouse.

Senior Jacob Schkud posted a team-high 12 kills tonight while Sean Carney and Joshua Walker each had 11. Carney led the team with seven digs and Walker had a team-high two service aces.

The Warriors had a chance to upset the Waves in the first game but fell short 31-29. UH was leading 29-28 at game point from a Walker kill but Pepperdine scored the next three points, two off UH errors, to win. UH was plagued by costly errors, including eight service errors and four attack errors.

Pepperdine took out the Warriors in the second stanza off a 6-1 run midway through the game and won 30-25. The Warriors did get within three, at 27-24 off a Carney kill, but the Waves did not let them get any closer. UH faced a setback of trailing by two games to the Waves.

The Waves stormed out in the third set and proved to be too much for UH and took the third game 30-17. Pepperdine's Paul Carroll led the match with 21 kills and Pepperdine outhit UH .537 to .330.

The Warriors and Waves finish their regular season tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. (4:00 HST). This will be the final match for Schkud as he is the lone senior on the squad as UH has missed the MPSF postseason tournament for the first time since 1993.
