UH Athletes Win High Jump, Shot Put At Last Chance Qualifier

SEATTLE - A trio of University of Hawai'i women's track and field athletes were in action at the Last Chance Qualifier Saturday at Dempsey Indoor on the University of Washington campus. High jumpers Emily Sheppard and Mallory Gilbert and shot putter Meghan Weaver were trying to improve their qualifying marks to advance to next week's NCAA Indoor Championships.

Sheppard (5-8.5/1.74m) won the high jump competition while Gilbert (5-6.5/1.69m) placed third. However, both did not improve on their seasonal-best NCAA provisional marks of 5-10.5/1.79m. The top 16 athletes nationally earn spots to nationals. Heading into this weekend, Sheppard and Gilbert are tied for 22nd.

Weaver had the day's best mark in the shot put (50-11/15.52m), however, she too did not improve on her season-best provisional mark of 52-6.5/16.01m, which she set at last week's WAC Championship. Weaver ranks No. 22 nationally and will likely miss out on a spot to nationals.

Annett Wichmann currently ranks 12th nationally in the pentathlon and will make her second straight trip to indoor nationals next week in Fayetteville, Ark. Last season, Wichmann became the first UH athlete to participate in the meet and placed 11th. She has a season-best mark of 4,027 points and last week captured her second straight WAC Indoor Championship.

The NCAA Championships concludes the indoor season. The event will take place March 14-15 at the University of Arkansas' Randal Tyson Track Center.
