No. 17 Hawai`i Falls To Saint Mary's, 4-2 In Nine Innings

HONOLULU - Saint Mary's Kat Delpit hit a two-run home run in the top of the ninth inning to down the 17th-ranked University of Hawai`i softball team, 4-2. SMC's Megan Galloway earned her second win over UH this week, throwing the final seven innings in relief, while Hawai`i's Jessica Morton (4-1) got her first loss of the season on the third day of the Bank of Hawaii Invitational tournament at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Hawai`i got off to a good start. Starting pitcher Kate Robinson launched a two run home run over the leftfield fence in the bottom of the first inning. She drove in Clare Warwick who had reached earlier in the inning on a single to rightfield. But Saint Mary's then held the 'Bows scoreless for the final eight innngs of the game.

The Gaels' cut UH's lead in half in the top of the third. Bronwyn Russell got a two-out single to left. But on the play, a fielding error the UH leftfielder allowed the ball to roll all the way to the fence. Russell ended up on third and immediately scored on the next play on an RBI single to deep short by Molly Bergeson. Then, SMC knotted the game at 2-2 in the top of the sixth when Russell scored her second run of the game on an RBI double by Jenna Smith.

In the top of the ninth, with the international tie-break rules in effect, Smith started at second base. She moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Sadie Dolcini. Then Kat Delpit came through with the game-winning, two-run home run to centerfield.

Robinson started the game for Hawai`i and threw the first six plus innings. She gave up two runs on eight SMC hits with a walk and four strike outs. Morton came in the top of the seventh and extinguished a Gael rally. With runners at the corners and no outs, Morton entered the game and got an unconventional double play. Lauren Clark hit a fly ball to right and Tanisha Milca made the catch and fired home to cut down pinch runner Kaely Cuthill at the plate. Morton then got Kayla Aldredge with a swinging strike out to end the inning.

Morton threw the last three innings, giving up the two runs on one hit with a strike out.

Hawai`i will play No. 12 Northwestern tomorrow in the final game of the Bank of Hawaii Invitaional at 4:00 pm tomorrow, Saturday, March 22.
