Tar Heels Hold Off No. 16 Hawai`i, 5-1

Box Score

HONOLULU - The No. 16 University of Hawai`i softball team (21-7) fell to North Carolina, 5-1 in the final game on day three of the Chevron Spring Fling Tournament at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium tonight. UNC's Danielle Spaulding fired a two-hitter in a complete game win while Courtney Baughman took the loss, dropping her record to 10-4 this season.

Both of Hawai`i's hits came off the bat of senior Kate Robinson, including a sixth inning home run over the leftfield fence. But that was the extent of the 'Bows offense for the game.

The Tar Heels scored one run in the second inning off an RBI single to centerfield by Whitney Allen that scored Emily Troup from second.

UNC added three more runs in the third. After getting the first two outs on a pop up to second and a liner to third, North Carolina then proceed to link together four hits, including an RBI double to the right-centerfield gap by Spaulding and a two-run double by Brittany McKinney. The Tar Heels then tacked on one more run in the bottom of the sixth. Allen started the inning with a single to left. Alyssa Francona moved her to second on a sacrifice bunt. On the play, third base was left open and pinch runner Dani Manko sprinted for third. Leftfielder Richie-Anne Titcomb ran to cover the bag, but the throw from second baseman Melissa Gonzalez was offline and Manko scored easily on the error to push the lead to 5-1.

The tournament now heads into bracket play tomorrow.
