HONOLULU - The No. 14 University of Hawai`i men's volleyball team (8-10, 5-8 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) dropped a four-set thriller to No. 8 UC Irvine Anteaters (11-11, 7-8 MPSF), 30-28, 25-30, 34-32, 31-29, in front of 2,837 fans Friday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The Warriors were led by senior Jacob Schkud who tallied 18 kills. Freshman Joshua Walker was second on the team with 17. Junior Sean Carney recorded 46 assists and six digs.
UH had the early advantage in game one and led at the break 15-12. However, the Anteaters engineered a 5-1 run to overtake the Warriors and won 30-28. The Warriors limited their mistakes and had one attack error but managed only 11 kills.
The Warriors revived themselves in the second stanza and won 30-25. Walker's fifth kill tied it up at 21 a piece and UH never looked back. Schkud tallied four kills in the game.
The Warriors could not put away the Anteaters down the stretch of the third set and lost 34-32. UH led 31-30 off an Anteater attack error but could not string together the win. The Warriors had problems throughout as they committed five service errors and four attack errors.
UH again had UCI on the ropes in the fourth game but could not hold on to its lead and lost 31-29. The Warriors had game point at 29-28 after an Anteater error but two straight miscues by UH gave UCI the set and match.
UH ends its homestand tomorrow night, Saturday, March 15, at 7:00 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
