RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The No. 15 University of Hawai`i softball team (10-2) scored four runs in the fifth and two in the seventh to pull away from UC Riverside (4-11), 6-0. Senior
Kate Robinson (4-2) picked up her third shut-out of the year with a complete game effort in the second game of today's double header at the Amy S. Harrison Field.
The second game of the day started off much like the first game did, with the two teams locked in a scoreless battle through the first four innings. But in the fifth, Hawai`i erupted for four runs. With one out, Kathryn Grimes got a sharp single up the middle to get the rally started. Melissa Gonzalez was then hit by a pitch and Tanisha Milca then hit a single to left to load the bases. Clare Warwick then hit a high-chopper of a single down the leftfield line.Traci Yoshikawa, who was pinch running for Grimes, scored easily from third and Gonzalez raced around third and slid past the tag to score from second. On the play, Milca advanced to third, and Warwick hustled to second on the throw home. A ground out to the shortstop put two outs on the board, but then Robinson came through with a clutch single to rightfield that scored both Milca and Warwick to push UH's lead to 4-0.
Then in the seventh, Milca started the inning off with a triple to the rightfield corner. The relay throw on the play from right went off-line, and Milca scored for the innings first run. Two batters later, with one out, Kaulana Gouldhit a double to the left-centerfield gap. Freshman Kate Adams pinch ran for Gould at second, and then scored two batters later off a sharp single up the middle by Brandi Peiler. That increased Hawai`i's lead to 6-0 with a half an inning to play.
Robinson fired a five-hitter and had one walk and six strike outs on the game. She also went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Milca was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a triple.
Hawai`i will now bus to Las Vegas, Nevada where they will play in the Eller Media Stadium Classic (Feb. 29-Mar. 2) against Western Kentucky, California, Long Beach State, Pittsburgh, and host, UNLV.
