CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - The No. 14 University of Hawai`i softball team (7-2) was shut out tonight by No. 11 UCLA, 3-0 in their third game of the Palm Springs Classic. Bruins' freshman pitcher Donna Kerr fired a one-hit shut-out with eight strike outs to quiet the Hawai`i bats.
Kate Robinson (3-2) took the loss, throwing 4.1 innings.
In the first inning, Amanda Kamekona drilled a home run over the leftfield fence. Then in the second, Jennifer Schroeder drove another home run to left, pushing the Bruin lead to 2-0.
In the fifth, UCLA added another run. GiOnna DiSalvatore started the rally after one out. She hit a double to the right-centerfield gap, moved to third on a wild pitch, then scored on a single up the middle by Sammie Camuso.
Robinson gave up three runs on nine hits with a walk and four strike outs. Senior reliever Jessica Morton made her first appearance this season, entering the game after one out in the top of the fifth. She threw 2.2 scoreless innings, gave up one hit, one walk and struck out one batter.
Hawai`i finishes the tournament tomorrow. First they will battle Long Island at 11:00 am then close with a final game against Team USA at 1:00 PM.
