Weaver's Heave Highlights UH Effort At UW Open

SEATTLE - University of Hawai'i senior Meghan Weaver bettered her school record in the shot put at the University of Washington Open Meet Sunday at Dempsey Indoor. Weaver broke her previous mark set two weeks ago at the UW Invitational.

The senior's throw of 50-9.5 (15.48m) was good enough for first place and was one of five UH athletes to win their respective events on the day. Weaver's mark was an NCAA provisional mark and moves her closer of earning a spot to the NCAA Indoor Championships next month.

So far this season, four UH athletes, Weaver, seniors Annett Wichmann (pentathlon) and Mallory Gilbert (high jump) and junior Emily Sheppard (high jump), have earned NCAA provisional marks. Last season, Wichmann was UH's lone participant in the event.

On Sunday, Thalia Amanakis won two events, the 60-meter hurdles (8.69) and the 400-meters, the latter of which she broke the school indoor mark with a time of 55.64 seconds. Including Saturday's Husky Classic, the Sydney, Australia native set two school records and had three personal bests.

Also winning their events were Sheppard in the high jump (5-9, 1.75m) and Wichmann in the long jump (18-8.75, 5.71m).

In all, the Rainbow Wahine set 10 new personal bests at the UW Open meet in addition to the 11 PRs set on Saturday at the Husky Classic.

The Rainbow Wahine will host the final Sunset meet of the indoor season this Saturday, the Terry Albritton Invitational. The meet is named after the late UH shot putter who once set the world record at an all-comers meet in Honolulu.
