HONOLULU - The 15th-ranked University of Hawai`i men's volleyball team (4-7, 3-5 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) could not keep up with the fourth-ranked UCLA Bruins (10-5, 7-4 MPSF) and were swept in three games, 30-28, 30-24, 30-26, Friday night, in front of 2,925 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The Warriors were led by senior Jacob Schkud and junior James Clar, who each tallied 10 kills. Junior Sean Carney recorded 32 assists.
The Bruins rebounded from a five-game loss to the Warriors the night before and have taken two of three matches from UH this season.
Game one featured both teams in a close struggle. UH took the advantage late in the game with a 28-26 lead off two UCLA attack errors. However, the Bruins regained their composure and scored four straight points for a 30-28 win.
UH could not find their hot hand in game two. The Warriors committed nine attack errors, six service errors, and only hit for .062. Despite their hitting woes, UH was down 15-14 at the midway point. The Bruins, though, engineered a 5-1 run late in the set to finish off the Warriors, 30-24.
UCLA again started off strong in game three. By the halfway point, the Bruins were ahead 15-13 off a kill by Jamie Diefenbach. UH tied the game at 16 off a Schkud kill. The Bruins pounded away and hit .405 for the game to end any hope of a UH comeback as they took game three 30-26.
The Warriors next travel to California for two matches against Pacific (Feb. 22, Feb. 25) and Stanford (Feb. 27, Feb. 28). The first match against the Tigers starts at 8:00 p.m. (PST) on Feb. 22.
