HONOLULU - The University of Hawai'i women's track and field team hosted the second of six Sunset Meets this season Saturday at Cooke Field. Junior
Thalia Amanakis stole the show with three Top 10 school performances.
The Sydney, Australia native broke her old school record in the 60-meter outdoor mark with a time of 8.83 seconds. Her previous best was 9.03 seconds.
Amanakis also won the 400-meter and 800-meter events posting times of 56.82 and 2:12.82, respectively. Both times now rank No. 7 on the all-time school lists.
In the highly competitive pole vault competition, junior Samantha Weaver out-jumped teammates Jessica Custance and Samantha Culiver. Weaver's mark of 12-1.75 (3.70m) moved her into third all-time in school history. Culiver, a junior from Scottsdale, Ariz., cleared 11-7.75 (3.55m) along with Custance to move into fifth all-time.
Seniors Annett Wichmann and Mallory Gilbert posted personal bests in the long jump, both of which moved them into the school's Top 10. Wichmann leaped 18-2.5 (5.55m) while Gilbert jumped 18-0.25 (5.49m).
Senior Candace Rosenthal captured the 200-meter dash with a Top 10 performance of 26.23 seconds. Sophomore Brittani Daniels won both the hammer throw and weight toss with throws of 152-9 (46.56m), and 50-9.75 (15.49m), respectively. Her hammer throw moved her into sixth all-time.
The Rainbow Wahine return to the Pacific Northwest where they will compete in the Husky Classic, Feb. 16, and UW Open Meet, Feb. 17, in Seattle, Wash.
