Hiram Thompson looks to pass or shoot against George Washington
HONOLULU – The University of Hawai`i men's basketball team used an inspired effort to defeat George Washington, 73-47, in the consolation bracket of the Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic Monday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. UH improved to 7-4 overall and advanced to Tuesday night's consolation championship.

Two nights after allowing up a season-high 51 percent shooting in a first-round loss to Colorado State, UH came out fired up and limited George Washington (6-4) to just 18 points and 25 percent shooting in the first half. The Colonials finished just 30 percent from the floor en route to a season-low 47 points. That defensive effort spurred UH to its seventh win in its last eight games at the Stan Sheriff Center and snapped Hawai`i's four-game Rainbow Classic losing streak.

Hawai`i will now face Pepperdine in the fifth-place game of the Rainbow Classic Tuesday night at 5:00 p.m. Buffalo and Colorado State with face off in the championship game at 7:30 p.m. The day session will include Coppin State-George Washington at 11:00 a.m. in the 7th-Place game and Vermont-Colorado in the 3rd-Place game.

Roderick Flemings posted his third career double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead UH. Petras Balocka added 14 points, while Lasha Parghalava chipped in 10. Junior center Paul Campbell (5 points, 4 rebounds) and sophomore Hiram Thompson (6 points, three assists, three steals) also contributed in their first career starts for UH.

UH came out with intensity from the opening tip. The 'Bows put down the defensive clamp on the Colonials in the first half, limiting George Washington to just 8-of-32 shooting , including 0-of-11 from three-point land. Balocka and Flemings combined for 23 of the team's 31 first-half points as UH led by 13 points at the break.

The Colonials chipped into the UH lead early in the second half. But the 'Bows went on a decisive 14-2 run, capped by a Balocka tip-in, to push its lead to 21 points. UH would not look back as the squad shot 56 percent in the second half to notch its most lopsided win of the season.
