HONOLULU – The University of Hawai`i women's basketball team opened up a four-game home stand Friday afternoon with a 66-48 loss to Washington State at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The Rainbow Wahine and the Cougars are playing a two-game series, with the conclusion on Monday, Dec. 22 at 5 p.m. Washington State won the first game and improved to 7-2. UH fell to 2-8 on the season.
UH was led offensively by
Sarah Ilic, who came off the bench to score 16 points and grab seven rebounds in 20 minutes of action. Ilic had missed the previous three games for UH.
Sophomore
Keisha Kanekoa was the second Rainbow Wahine in double figures, scoring 12 points and grabbing nine rebounds in 33 minutes of action. Kanekoa also continued her hot shooting from the free throw line, going 2-for-2. Kanekoa is now 33-for-35 on the season.
Dita Liepkalne added eight points and seven rebounds in 36 minutes.
To open the game, the Rainbow Wahine went on a 14-3 run. But the Cougars closed the gap and eventually took the lead going into halftime. UH trailed 32-28 at the break. The Rainbow Wahine struggled offensively to start the second half, and the Cougars made a run to open up their lead.
In the first half, Kanekoa was leading the offense, scoring all of her 12 points.
Allie Patterson added four points as UH shot 42.9 percent from the field. In the second half, UH shot 30.8 percent.
UH returns to action Monday, Dec. 22 when it hosts Washington State for the final game of a two-game series at 5 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
