UH Races Past Chicago State, 85-75

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai`i Rainbow Warrior basketball team got off to a furious start and never looked back in a 85-75 win over Chicago State Monday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. UH improved to 5-3 on the season with its fifth straight home victory.
 
The 85 points was a season high for the Rainbow Warriors, who also improved to 4-0 on Monday night games in the Stan Sheriff Center. UH was again powered by the big three of Petras Balocka, Roderick Flemings and Bill Amis. Balcoka led the way with 21 points and 10 rebounds for his second career double-double. The junior post player also dished out a career-high six assists. Flemings finished with 20 points and seven rebounds, while Amis chipped in 14 points and seven boards.
 
Chicago State's David Holston, the nation's second leading scorer at 26.9 ppg, finished with a game-high 28 points, with 21 of those coming in the second half.
 
UH was in control for nearly the entire game, though there was no quit in Chicago State.
Hawai`i got off to a blazing start, scoring the game's first nine points. The 'Bows built a double-digit lead less than seven minutes into the game and led by as many as 24 points, before taking a 44-22 lead into the locker room. Hawai`i held Chicago State to just 23 percent shooting in the first half, while limiting Holston to just seven points.
 
Despite UH's dominance in the first 20 minutes, the Cougars wouldn't fold and scored the first seven points of the second half. UH maintained its double-digit nearly the rest of the way, though the Cougars made a late run, fueled by Holston. The 5-8 guard's sixth three-pointer of the game cut the deficit to 77-68 with 1:54 left. But Balocka answered with a three-pointer of his own on UH's next possession to quell any Cougar hopes for a miracle comeback.
 
UH finished with a season-high 23 assists on 29 made field goals with sophomore guard Kareem Nitoto recording a career high eight assists. UH out-rebounded its seventh opponent in eight games with a 45-41 margin over the Cougars. The Rainbow Warriors also rejected nine shots, including four by junior center Paul Campbell.
 
UH now has an eight-day break before hosting UC Riverside on Tuesday, Dec. 23. Tipoff is set for 7:05 p.m.
