HONOLULU – In a roller coaster of a game, the University of Hawai'i Rainbow Warrior basketball pulled off a 60-59 win over Iowa State, Monday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Bill Amis drained a pair of free throws with 2.4 seconds left to lift the Rainbow Warriors (2-2) to their second straight home win.
UH rallied from a 13-point hole with 10 minutes remaining and a seven-point deficit with just over two minutes left. The UH comeback was completed when Amis was fouled just past midcourt by Craig Brackins on a long UH inbounds pass from
Adhar Mayen and hit the ensuing free thows.
Brackins had made one of two free throws, just moments earlier, to give Iowa State a 59-58 lead with 2.6 seconds to play. The Cyclones had one last gasp effort following Amis' free throws, but Diante Garrett's half-court heave bounced off the backboard. Garrett scored a game-high 26 points to lead Iowa State (3-1).
It was a fitting end to a wild game which saw both teams rally from double-digit deficits. UH built a 12-point lead in the first half. But the Cylcones went on a 31-6 run in a 10-minute span between the first and second halves, to grab a 13-point lead of their own.
UH later responded with 14 unanswered points as
Roderick Flemings' two free throws gave UH a 51-50 lead with 5:14 left. The Cyclones scored the game's next eight points to surge ahead by seven points with just over two minutes remaining and looked poised to win the game.
But it would be the Rainbow Warriors who would have the last say as they went on a 7-0 run—highlighted by an
Adhar Mayen three pointer and a game-tying bucket by
Petras Balocka with 40 seconds remaining—to help set up the game's final heart-stopping 2.6 seconds.
Amis finished with a team-high 17 points for the 'Bows. The junior forward hit 7-of-11 shots and nailed his only two free throw attempts at the most opportune time. As a team UH made all but one of their 21 free throw attempts (95.2 percent).
Three other Rainbow Warriors finished in double-digits. Balocka scored 15 points, Flemings had 12 and Mayen added 10.
Hawai'i is back in action next week Monday, Dec. 1, when it hosts Prairie View A&M. Tip-off is set for 7:05 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
