HONOLULU – The University of Hawai`i Warrior football team concluded its Western Athletic Conference schedule with a dominating 49-17 win over Idaho Saturday night at Aloha Stadium. UH improved to 6-5 overall and finished WAC play with a 5-3 mark.
With the victory, UH moved a step closer to the 7-win threshold needed for bowl eligibility. Hawai`i needs one win its final two home games versus Washington State and Cincinnati to secure a spot in the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl.
For the second straight game UH got production from both sides of the ball to steamroll to its most lopsided win of the year. The Warrior offense put up a season-high 49 points and was boosted by a defense that forced four Vandal (2-10, 1-7 WAC) turnovers.
For the Warriors it was all about the quick strike. Four touchdown drives lasted 30 seconds or less, while another was just 68 seconds long. UH converted three interceptions into eventual touchdowns and got its longest play from scrimmage to trounce the Vandals.
Greg Alexander completed 14-of-24 passes for 264 yards and a career-high three touchdowns to power the Warrior offense.
Malcolm Lane caught four passes for a career high 144 yards and two touchdowns, while
Daniel Libre scored two rushing touchdowns.
The UH defense, meanwhile, was relentless. The Warriors set a season-high with seven sacks and recorded seven quarterback hurries, UH limited the Vandals to just 173 yards of offense through three quarters of action. Senior linebacker
Solomon Elimimian led the way with 13 tackles, while defensive lineman
Josh Leonard and
Keala Watson had two sacks each.
After spotting Idaho the first seven points of the game, UH scored 21 straight points to take command early. Idaho marched down with a 71-yard scoring drive that last more than seven minutes to open the game. UH responded with a touchdown on its opening drive capped by an Alexander quarterback sneak. On UH's next possession, Alexander found Lane streaking down the sideline for an 82-yard bomb, the team's longest play from scrimmage this season.
Two interceptions, one by
Jameel Dowling and another by
Desmond Thomas, set up two UH touchdowns in the second quarter as the Warriors took a 28-10 lead into the locker room and never looked back.
UH continues its season-ending three-game homestand when it hosts Washington State on Saturday, Nov. 29. Kickoff is set for 6:05 p.m.
