HONOLULU— Playing before a national television audience, the University of Hawai`i Rainbow Warrior basketball team picked up its first win of the season with a hard-fought 67-64 overtime decision over Idaho State Monday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
For the third straight game the Rainbow Warriors (1-2) found themselves in a see-saw affair, but this time were able to come out on the winning end. UH trailed by as many as seven points in the second half, rallied back, and eventually wore down the Bengals (0-1) in the overtime period with some clutch free throw shooting.
It wasn't pretty however. As the third game in ESPN's College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon, the contest started at 11:05 p.m. and ended with the final buzzer at 1:30 a.m. The late night start could have explained some ragged play. UH shot just 33 percent from the floor, while Idaho State shot just 36 percent. The teams also combined for 42 turnovers.
In the end, UH would out-last Idaho State (0-1), draining 7-of-8 free throws in the final 23 seconds to seal the win.
Roderick Flemings scored a team-high 17 points, including five crucial points in overtime, to lead the 'Bows. The junior also added eight rebounds and two steals while playing the full 45 minutes.
Bill Amis finished with 13 points and eight rebounds.
A pair of 'Bows making their first starts responded with solid performances.
Brandon Adams finished with 10 points and six rebounds and got off to a quick start by scoring nine of the team's first 11 points.
Adhar Mayen contributed eight points and five rebounds and was active on the defensive end with four steals.
Ammorow Morgan led Idaho State with 26 points, including the tying bucket with one minute remaining to help send the game into overtime. UH actually had two opportunities to win the game in regulation. The first came when
Lasha Parghalava's three-point attempts bounced off the rim with 1.4 seconds. The Bengals gained possession but turned the ball over on the ensuing inbounds play without any time coming off the clock. UH, however, fell short on its inbounds pass also as a lob pass to Flemings on the final play of regulation was broken up by the Bengals.
UH finished the game with a 43-37 advantage on the boards and out-scored the Bengals, 29-18, at the free throw line.
Hawai`i returns to action next week Monday, Nov. 24, when it hosts Big 12 squad Iowa State. Tip-off is set for 7:05 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
