Petras Balocka and Bill Amis defend against Cal State Fullerton
HONOLULU – The University of Hawai`i Rainbow Warrior basketball team dropped its second straight game to open the season with a 90-74 loss to Cal State Fullerton in the Verizon Wireless Tip-Off Classic Sunday night. Josh Akognon poured in a Stan Sheriff Center record 41 points to lift the Titans (1-1) to victory.

Akognon's 41 points surpassed the old record of 38 points shared by New Orleans' Hector Romero (2002) and TCU's Marquise Gainous (2000). Akognon drained seven three pointers—tying the most-ever by a UH opponent—en route to his record-setting performance.

As a team, the Titans drained 11-of-27 three-pointers and shot 64 percent from the field in the second half to break away after a deadlocked first half. Fullerton also got a solid performance from its other backcourt standout Jacques Streeter, who finished with 15 points and nine assists.

Roderick Flemings led three 'Bows in double figures with 21 points and also added five rebounds. Petras Balocka finished with 14 points, while Brandon Adams provided a lift off the bench with 13 points and five rebounds in just 13 minutes of action. Bill Amis grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds for the 'Bows, who out-rebounded the Titans, 40-32.

The first half was a tight one with nine ties and 10 lead changes. UH shot 53 percent in the first half, but Akognon countered with 20 points for Fullerton as the game was tied, 37-37 at the break.  UH led 43-39 in the opening 2:30 of the second half, but the Titans went on a decisive 10-1 run to take a 49-44 lead. The Rainbow Warriors would play catch-up the rest of the way and would never lead again. UH shot just 11-of-20 from the free throw line and turned the ball over 18 times, including 14 turnovers in the first half.

In the first game of the evening, San Francisco defeated Texas State, 88-74. The Dons went 2-0 over the weekend as three players—Dior Lowhorn, Blake Wallace and Manny Quezada—were named to the Verizon Wireless Classic all-tournament. Joining the trio were Akognon and Brent Benson of Texas State.

The Rainbow Warriors will now have a quick turnaround as they host Idaho State in a nationally televised ESPN game on Monday night. Tipoff is set for 11:05 p.m. All tickets are general admission and UH-System students get in free. All fans are encouraged to wear green.
