Taryn Fukuroku scored the game-winning goal for the University of Hawai`i women's soccer team Sunday night, three minutes into overtime to beat San Jose State 2-1 at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
Playing in their school-record ninth overtime game of the season, the Rainbow Wahine ending it at the 92:45 mark when Fukuroku took a free kick from just outside the box. The goal came off a quick touch by
Kristyn Shapka, and Fukuroku drilled a line drive into the lower left of the goal.
With the win, UH picks up its first WAC victory of the season, improving to 1-1-1 in conference play and 5-5-4 overall. San Jose State dropped to 1-2-0 in conference play and 4-8-3 overall.
Both teams were held scoreless in the first half, but opening up the scoring quickly in the second half.
The Rainbow Wahine got on the board first, scoring 1:15 seconds into the start of the second half. Fukuroku took a corner kick from the left side and
Chelsea Deptula headed the corner kick past San Jose State goalkeeper Nina Butera for the first goal of the game.
San Jose State answered three minutes later when Emmy Belding scored to tie the game 1-1. The score remained tied until Fukuroku's game-winner. It was Fukuroku's first game-winning goal of the season.
Offensively the Rainbow Wahine dominated the game, taking 22 shots, including 17 in the second half, compared to the Spartans' four shots. UH had seven shots on goal, while San Jose State had three.
Kori Lu finished the game with two saves, while Butera finished with five saves for the Spartans.
UH remains at home and plays its final two home matches of the season next week. The Rainbow Wahine face Utah State on Friday, Oct. 24 at 5 p.m. and end the home schedule against Louisiana Tech on Sunday, Oct. 26 at 5 p.m. Sunday's match will be honoring six seniors, playing in their final home match.
