Women’s Soccer Opens WAC Play With Tough Loss at Nevada

RENO, Nev. – The University of Hawai`i women's soccer team opened up WAC play Friday night with a tough 1-0 loss at Nevada. The Rainbow Wahine battled through snow flurries at Mackay Stadium in Reno, where the game-time temperature was 31 degrees.
 
UH had nearly three times as many shots as Nevada, but came away with its third straight loss in Reno. In 2006, the Rainbow Wahine lost at Nevada during the regular season and in the WAC tournament. This season the WAC tournament will also be played in Reno.
 
With the loss, the Rainbow Wahine open conference play 0-1 and fall to 4-5-3 overall. Nevada picked up its first win of the year and improved to 1-0 in conference and 1-9-2 overall.
 
Offensively, the Rainbow Wahine controlled the game, taking 16 shots, with 10 shots on goal, compared to the Wolf Pack's five shots and one shot on goal.
 
Nevada's one shot on goal came in the 67th minute when Patrice Godwin beat goalkeeper Kori Lu, for the game's only goal.
 
For UH, Taryn Fukuroku had six shots, with four shots on goal, while Ambree Ako had six shots with three on goal. Kristyn Shapka added three shots on goal and Mari Punzal had one.
 
The Rainbow Wahine wrap up their road trip on Sunday, Oct. 12 when they face Fresno State at 2 p.m. (11 a.m. HT) at Bulldog Stadium in Fresno, Calif.
