Warriors Drop Season Opener In Four To Penn State In Outrigger Hotels Invitational

HONOLULU - The 11th-ranked University of Hawai`i men's volleyball team dropped a four set match 30-21, 24-30, 20-30, 18-30 to No. 4 Penn State in the nightcap on the first day of action in the 14th Outrigger Hotels Invitational at the Stan Sheriff Center in front of 2,832 (issued).

The Warriors (0-1) held Penn State to a mere .057 hitting percentage in the opening set while winning it convincingly, 30-21. UH trailed 14-12 then went on a 9-2 run taking command of the set. UH managed a huge front posting 6.0 blocks in the set, four by Matt Rawson.

The Nittany Lions (1-0) evened the match at a game apiece with a 30-24 win in Game 2. PSU was down 12-11 and then outscored UH 9-3 and led by as many as seven (28-21). PSU out hit UH .310 to .206 in the set.

Penn State jumped out to a 10-3 lead in Game 3 and extended to as many as 10 on four occasions, including the final margin of victory, 30-20. PSU hit a whopping .467, while UH hit only .042. The Nittany Lions also improved up front picking up 9.5 block over the course of games two and three.

In Game 4, PSU took the early lead in the set and led 15-10 before UH rallied to pull to within three at 20-17. However, Penn State would reel off the next nine points and finish off the match 30-18.

The Warriors hit .136 collectively on the night. Jim Clar led the way with a team-high 15 kills followed by Jacob Schkud's 10. Setter Sean Carney dished out 38 of UH's 42 assists, while Rawson and Schkud tied for team honors with five blocks each.

Penn State hit .288 with Matt Anderson posting a match-high 21 kills and setter Luke Murray dishing out 56 assists.

Tomorrow night, Penn State battles No. 3 UCLA at 4:00 p.m., while the Warriors host Ball State at 7:00 p.m.
