Rainbow Wahine 2008 Season At Run For The Dream Meet

FRESNO, Calif. - The University of Hawai'i women's track and field team had a successful showing at the season-opening Run for the Dream meet, Monday, at Fresno State's SaveMart Center. The Rainbow Wahine captured four individual titles and eight other medals in the quad meet.

Along with UH and host Fresno State, Cal Poly and Cal State Stanislaus also competed in the four-way dual meet. In the dual format scoring system, the Rainbow Wahine defeated CSUS, 81-44, but dropped close decisions to Cal Poly, 68-64, and Fresno State, 71-60.

"I'm quite happy with our performance today," head coach Carmyn James said. "It was a pretty good start to the season and we're looking forward to hosting this Saturday's Sunset Meet."

Junior Thalia Amanakis captured two individual titles in the 55-meter hurdles (8.18) and in the 800 meter dash (9:20.45).

The Rainbow Wahine placed 1-2-3 in the high jump. Emily Sheppard cleared 5-8.75 (1.75m), edging teammates Mallory Gilbert (5-7, 1.70m) and Annett Wichmann (5-5, 1.65m). Wichmann also took third in the 55-meter hurdles, clocking in at 8.54 seconds and Sheppard placed third in the long jump (16-10, 5.13m).

UH placed first and second in the pole vault, with Jessica Custance (formerly Trujillo) and Patricia Gauthier each jumping 12-1.5 (3.70m). Custance took top honors based on attempts.

Senior Chantelle Wilder was runner-up in the controversial mile competition. Wilder finished six seconds behind Fresno State's Roxanne Sellick, despite having to run one extra lap due to an official's error.

Senior Meghan Weaver placed third in the shot put, heaving 47-0.25 (14.33). UH's two relay teams placed second in the 4x400 (4:08.31) and third in the 4x160 (78.92).

The Rainbow Wahine will next host the first Sunset Meet of the season, Saturday, Jan. 26, at Cooke Field.
