WAIPAHU, O`ahu - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine soccer team put on a record-setting performance in defeating Hawaii Pacific, 11-0, Sunday night at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. UH set a new school record for goals in a match, while sophomore forward
Vanessa Bailey became just the third UH player to record a hat trick.
The Rainbow Wahine improved to 7-2-1 overall with the win and remained unbeaten (7-0-1) this year at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. The Sea Warriors dropped to 1-6 on the season.
In the first meeting between the teams in seven years, the Rainbow Wahine dominated the Division II Sea Warriors from start to finish. It took the Rainbow Wahine more than 22 minutes to get on the board, but once they did the flood gates opened and a slew of records fell.
Among the records were most goals in a match (11), shattering the old record of eight set against Morehead State in 2003; most goal in a half (7) and most assists (11). The Rainbow Wahine also launched a school-record 54 shots, while not allowing a single shot by the over-matched opponent, another first in school history.
Eight different players scored for UH, including Bailey, Kelli-Anne Chang (2), Chelsea Deptula, Jessica Domingo, Alexis Choi, Emma-Makepa Foley, Mallory Maughan and Kelsie Look.
Bailey scored her first career goal in the 38th minute, then scored two of UH's seven second-half goals, including her final goal with just 47 seconds remaining. The native of Northville, Mich., joined former Rainbow Wahine Veronica Flores and Natasha Kai as the only UH players to record a hat trick.
All 21 players who suited up for the Rainbow Wahine saw action, while UH played without starters Tehane Higa and Kristen Oshiro. Hawai`i remained undefeated in eight all-time meetings with HPU.
UH next heads to Southern California for a pair of road matches. The trip starts with a meeting against Loyola Marymount on Thursday, Oct. 4. Kickoff is 4:00 p.m. PDT (1:00 p.m. HST).
