WAIPAHU, O`ahu - In their second meeting in the last three days, the University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine soccer team blanked Duquesne, 2-0, Sunday at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. UH remained undefeated on the year, winning their third straight match and moving to 5-0-1.
Two days after launching 22 shots in a 5-2 romp of Duquesne, the Rainbow Wahine had a decidedly tougher matches versus the Dukes. UH held just a 9-4 shot advantage but got goals by Tehane Higa and Taryn Fukuroku to secure the win.
Higa's goal came in the 19th minute and UH held that slim advantage for the majority of the match, before Fukuroku's goal 78 seconds before the end of regulation insured the win. Fukuroku has now scored in four straight matches, the second longest scoring streak in UH history. Natasha Kai holds the program record with at least one goal in nine straight matches during the 2003 season.
Higa, meanwhile, scored for the third straight match. The junior defender scored her fourth goal of the season off a UH corner kick. Ambree Ako served the ball near post, where Higa burst through the Dukes defense with a header that bounced past Duquesne goalkeeper Brittany Findley.
Duquesne (3-3) hung tough for the duration and moved in desperation mode near the end of the match. But Fukuroku squashed any Duke hopes, by stealing an outlet pass and ripping a 30-yard shot for her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
UH has scored at least two goals in all six matches this season. Meanwhile, the Rainbow Wahine defense held the Dukes without a shot on goal as UH goalkeepers Kori Lu and Nicole McClure combined for the shutout, the team's third of the year.
Hawai`i next heads for the road for the first time this season with matches vs. Cal State Northridge and nationally ranked UCLA. UH begins the trip against the Matadors on Friday, Sept. 21 at 3:00 p.m. PDT.
