'Bows Can't Hold Early Lead, Fall 5-3 At Nevada

Box Score

RENO, Nev. - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (31-21, 9-11 WAC) fell to the Nevada Wolf Pack (30-22, 12-7) 5-3 in front of a crowd of 819 at Peccole Park Sunday. Matthew Daly (5-2) allowed four earned runs on only four hits in 6.0 innings, taking the loss. Rod Scurry (3-5) got the win for the Pack while Jared Mitchell picked up his first save of the season.

Brandon Haislet led the way, going 2-for-4 with one RBI, one run and one double. Kris Sanchez and Jonathan Hee also went 2-for-4, while Justin Frash and Vinnie Catricala both drove in a run.

The Rainbows jumped out early as Frash, Haislet and Catricala drove in a run each to take a 3-0 lead in the first.

But Nevada came back in the bottom of the fourth. Konrad Schmidt got the first hit for the Wolf Pack, before being driven in on a two-out triple by Terry Walsh. After an errant throw from the outfield, Walsh ran home, scoring on a contraversial play at the plate in which Hernandez threw home to Daly, who thought he tagged out the runner at home. But home plate umpire Dan Payne called the runner safe, allowing UN within a run at 3-2. The runs given up by Daly ended his streak of 20.0-consecutive innings without a run.

The Wolf Pack then came up with a three-run sixth inning, including a home run by Walsh, putting UN up 5-3.

Hawai`i had an opportunity in the seventh, placing runners on second and third with just one out. But Nevada was able to stop the rally, keeping their two-run edge. The 'Bows were able to come up with a couple hits in the eighth and ninth innings, but never string together a run, preserving Nevada's 5-3 victory.

The two teams will conclude their series tomorrow at 6:00 p.m. (3:00 p.m. HST).
