SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (24-12, 5-4 WAC) fell the Sacramento State Hornets (10-22, 5-7) 8-5 in the series finale at Hornet Field Saturday.
Joshua Schneider (3-2) took the loss, allowing four runs in 4.0 innings. Mick Joyce (2-4) got the win for the Hornets.
Kris Sanchez continued his hot hitting, going 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. Justin Frash added a 2-for-3 game with two RBI and a run while Elijah Christensen went 2-for-4 with one RBI.
The Rainbows had a golden opportunity to score in the top of the first, loading the bases with just one out. But Joyce was able to enduce a double play ball, keeping the 'Bows off the board.
The Hornets took advantage, posting a single run in the bottom of the second to take the early edge. Sacramento State then put up three in the bottom of the fourth to give them a 4-0 advantage. In the mean time, Joyce had retired 11-consecutive 'Bows between the second and fifth innings, keeping the Hornets ahead.
The 'Bows finally put up some offense in the sixth, as Frash sacrificed in Jonathan Hee, cutting the deficit back to 4-1. But Sac State came right back with a two-run bottom half of the inning, getting it to 6-1.
Hawai`i was able to post another run in the top of the seventh, scoring on a RBI-single by Christensen, getting it to 6-2. But the Hornets kept the pressure on in the bottom of the seventh, scoring two more to get their lead to 8-2.
Sanchez hit a two-run home run to cap a three-run eighth inning, cutting it back to 8-5. But the 'Bows couldn't put up a run in the ninth, falling by the final of 8-5.
Hawai`i will next face Pacific in a midweek, non-conference game on Tuesday, April 10, before heading down to Fresno State for a three-game series from April 13-15.
