No. 14 Hawai`i Defeats Utah State, 11-3

LOGAN, Utah - The No. 14 Rainbow Wahine (43-9, 14-2 WAC) pulled away from Utah State, 11-3 at the Johnson Field in Logan, Utah. Kate Robinson (15-0, 8-0 WAC) got the complete-game win, giving up three runs on four this with a walk and a strike out. Tyleen Tausaga led UH by going 2-for-2 with a home run, two runs scored, three RBI, and two walks. Hawai`i remains atop the WAC and can clinch at least a share of the regular season title with one more win.

Hawai`i jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead after the top of the first. Tanisha Milca led the game off by getting hit by a pitch. Clare Warwick then hit a grounder to third. The Aggies' third baseman tried to get the force at two, but the second baseman muffed the throw. On the play, the ball trickled into rightfield, allowing Milca to get to third base. Kaulana Gould then hit a ground ball into the hole at short. Gould beat out the throw and Milca scored from third. Then, Tausaga stepped to the plate and launched a home run off the top of the scoreboard in right-centerfield to score both Warwick and Gould.

But the Aggies answered right back in the bottom of the first. Amy Schaible started things off with a sharp single up the middle. Then Jamie Fife drew a walk to put runners at first and second. Robinson struck out the third batter, but then Aubrie Stroman hit a three-run home run over the rightfield fence to cut Hawai`i's lead to 4-3 after one complete inning.

After an out, Milca reached on a single up the middle. After a pop-fly to the pitcher, Gould got another single to short to put two runners on for Tausaga, who walked to load the bases. Robinson then hit an opposite field single to right that allowed both Milca and Gould to score to push UH's lead to 6-3. Kathryn Grimes led the fourth inning off with a walk. Julie Franklin then came in to pinch run for Grimes and Milca got beaned for the second time in the game. Warwick then ripped an opposite field triple down the rightfield line to score both Franklin and Milca to extend their lead to 9-3.

Hawai`i added a pair of runs in the top of the seventh. Tausaga started things with a single up the middle. Then with two outs, pinch hitter Amanda Tauali`i lined a shot to straight-away center. It sailed over the centerfielder for an RBI double that scored Tausaga from second. Valana Manuma then re-entered for Tauali`i at second. Alana Power then hit a single to left, Manuma motored around third to score as the catcher dropped the ball when Manuma slid into home for UH's final run of the game, with the score raising to 11-3.

After giving up the first inning home run, Robinson settled down to retire the next fifteen batters in a row.

Hawai`i will close their regular season schedule with a double header tomorrow against the Aggies starting at 1:00 p.m.
