HONOLULU - In a battle for first place in the WAC,
Kaulana Gould and
Clare Warwick hit solo home runs to lead No. 16 Hawai`i over WAC rival, No. 25 Fresno State, 2-1.
Kate Robinson (14-0, 7-0 WAC) got the win with her 14th complete game of the season. It is the first time UH has ever won a series over the Bulldogs. The `Bows raised their record to 42-9 overall and continue to lead the WAC with a 13-2 conference record.
In the bottom of the first, Gould hit a shot over the centerfield fence for the game's first run. It was her third home run of the year and fifth of her career.
Fresno State's Nichole Willis answered right back in the top of the second with a solo home run of her own over the leftfield fence to knot the game up at 1-1.
In the bottom of the third Hawai`i's Warwick then drilled a one out solo home run to left-centerfield to take the lead back, 2-1. That proved to be the final and winning run for UH. It was Warwick's fifth home run of the season.
Robinson retired the first 16-of-17 batters she faced, at one point, retiring 13 straight batters between the second and sixth inning. The only hit she allowed during that span was the home run by Willis. But in the sixth, the Bulldogs stranded two runners and in the seventh, they mounted a furious come back.
Fresno State started the seventh with two consecutive singles by Willis and Merryann Barr. Robin Mackin then hit a ground ball to short, but the Bulldogs' pinch baserunner, Kori Sherman ran into UH shortstop Valana Manuma while she was trying to field the ball. Sherman was out on interference, but FSU still had two runners on. Shannon Garvin then hit a ground out to short to move both runners into scoring position. Michelle Palazuelos then drew a walk that loaded the bases. Lisamarie Coronado then stepped to the plate with two outs and the bases loaded. Robinson hit two quick strikes to go ahead in the count 0-2. Then, after a foul ball, Coronado smacked a hard hit up the middle. But senior, Alana Power made a clean backhand stop on the full run and her momentum carried her to second base for the force out to end the game.
Robinson (14-0) threw the complete game, giving up the one run on five hits with two walks and eight strike outs.
Fresno State got a complete game effort from Merryann Barr (9-7) who gave up two runs on six hits with no walks or strike outs.
The game was the final home appearance for two Rainbow Wahine, seniors Power and Tyleen Tausaga, who were honored after the game.
Hawai`i will now head to Logan, Utah to battle Utah State in their final conference series of the year.
