Hawai`i Pulls Away From BC, 8-0

Box Score

HONOLULU - The Rainbow Wahine softball team (22-5) defeated Boston College, 8-0 in the semi-final game of the Hawaiian Airlines Spring Fling tournament. Justine Smethurst fired a complete-game two-hit shut-out. On offense, the game was highlighted by a three-run home run by Kate Robinson and a opposite field, solo shot by Tyleen Tausaga. The Bows will now battle No.14 Oregon State for the tourney championship tomorrow at 2:00 pm.

The Rainbow Wahine got off to a fast start, scoring a single run in the top of the first. With one out, Clare Warwick hit a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kaulana Gould. Tyleen Tausaga then hit a two-out looping single to leftfield to drive in Warwick who with two outs, sprinted around from second to score.

In the second, UH led the inning off with back-to-back doubles by Brandi Peiler and Valana Manuma. Peiler's double hit just below the top of the right-centerfield fence. Manuma then drove in Traci Yoshikawa, who pinch ran for Peiler at second, with a sharply hit double down the leftfield line to extend Hawai`i's lead to 2-0.

In the top of the fifth, Warwick started another rally with her second single of the night. She moved to second on Gould's second sacrifice bunt of the night. Then Tausaga hit a double to right-centerfield to put two runners into scoring position for Robinson. Robinson then drove a ball over the leftfield fence for a three run home run. In the first inning, she hit another bomb to left, but it drifed just to the left of the foul pole. For Robinson, it was her third home run in three games against Boston College. She leads the team with eight home runs thus far this season.

In the top of the seventh, UH added three more runs. Tausaga started the inning with an opposite field home run to left field. Then, Robinson followed with a single to left. The Eagles then used their third pitcher of the night, Savana Lloyd, but she allowed Robinson to score on three wild pitches that moved her around the bases. Lloyd walked Peiler, and she moved to third on two more wild pitches. Then Manuma hit a single to right to drive in Peiler from third. Alana Power followed with a single to left. Then BC re-entered Britney Thompson, their second pitcher, who eventually got the final two outs to close out the seventh.

For Smethurst, this marked her third straight complete game shut out. She scattered two hits, walked one and struck out three, facing only 24 batters in the game.

Boston College used three pitchers. Taylor Payton got the start and threw 3.0 innings. She gave up two runs on five hits with two walks and a strike out. Thompson then came in relief, throwing a total of 4.0 innings in which she gave up five runs on six hits and two strike outs. Lloyd faced three batters and gave up two hits and a walk.
