Hawai`i Hits Back-To-Back Home Runs In First To Down Eagles, 5-1

HONOLULU - The Rainbow Wahine softball team (17-5) had 10 hits en route to a 5-1 win over Boston College (1-2). Kate Robinson and Brandi Peiler hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the first inning. Pitcher Justine Smethurst (6-3) had a complete game victory, scattering eight hits while walking two and striking out six.

UH started the game with a bang as they jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Tanisha Milca led the game of with a walk. After a strike out and a diving catch by the centerfielder, UH started a two-out rally. Tyleen Tausaga was hit by a pitch. Then came Robinson's home run over the right-centerfield fence. Next, Peiler crushed a line shot over the leftfield fence to push the score to 4-0.

The Eagles posted one run in the top of the fifth to cut UH's lead to 4-1. Taylor Peyton led the inning off with a hard hit double to the right-centerfield gap. She moved to third on an illegal pitch, then scored on a wild pitch.

The Rainbow Wahine got the run back in the bottom of the inning, pushing one run across when Clare Warwick drew a bases loaded walk that forced Valana Manuma across the plate for UH's fifth run.

The Eagles' Britney Thompson started the game, but did not make it through the first inning. She took the loss after throwing 0.2 innings. Peyton Taylor came in relief and threw the final 5.1 innings, giving up one run on eight hits with five walks and one strike out.

Hawai`i's Robinson went 3-for-4 with a single, a double, and a home run with three RBI. Manuma was 3-for-3 with a walk and one run scored. Peiler was 1-for-4 with a home run.

For BC, Ashley Obrest was 2-for-3 and Thompson was 2-for-4. Peyton went 1-for-3 with a double.

The two teams will now enter the 2007 Hawaiian Airlines Spring Fling Tournament that starts Thursday. Hawai`i will face the Pacific Tigers and the Liberty Flames on the opening day starting at 5:00pm Both games will be televised on KFVE.
