HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (15-7) shut out the No. 24 Arizona Wildcats (14-6) 4-0 in front of a season-high crowd of 3,523 at the Les Murakami Stadium Saturday.
Mark Rodrigues (5-1) got the victory, giving up no runs, no walks and just three hits in 7.0 innings. Brad Mills (4-2) gave up just one run in 6.0 innings with seven strikeouts, but took the loss.
Elijah Christensen again led the charge offensively, going 2-for-3 with one run. Brandon Haislet added a 2-for-3 game with a double while Vinnie Catricala was 1-for-3 with a run, a double and one RBI. Justin Frash added a 1-for-4 game with two RBI.
Both pitchers kept the scoreboard clean for the first six and a half innings. Mills kept UH to just four hits in that span while Rodrigues didn't allow a Wildcat to get past second base.
But the Hawai`i offense awoke in the bottom of the seventh. Catricala doubled down the left line, scoring Christensen to give the 'Bows the first run of the game. Derek DuPree later singled in Catricala before Frash hit a two-run single, giving UH the 4-0 lead.
Tyler Davis then came in to close the door, allowing just one walk in 2.0 innings, preserving the Rainbow victory.
The two teams will have the series rubber match tomorrow at the Les Murakami Stadium at 1:05 p.m. UH will start Joshua Schneider against UA's David Coulon.
