HONOLULU - In the bottom of the seventh, senior
Tyleen Tausaga drilled a two-run, walk-off home run over the rightfield fence to propel Hawai`i (3-0) over No.24 Auburn, 2-1 in the Oceanic Time Warner Cable Paradise Classic.
Hawai`i had trailed the entire game, 1-0. Auburn pitcher Anna Thompson stifled UH through the first six innings. She had a perfect game through four-and-two-thirds innings. With two outs in the fifth, Clare Warwick hit a looping ground ball to the Tiger shortstop who could not field it cleanly for an error to break the perfect game. Kate Robinson then got Hawai`i's first hit of the game with a single to left to put two runners on. But the rally would stall with a strike out. Thompson struck out 11 batters and got UH hitters to pop up five times. The freshman has 22 strike outs in two games, with two losses.
While Thompson baffled UH batters, Justine Smethurst (2-0) stymied the Auburn hitters, allowing one, unearned run in the top of the first. She picked up the win by scattering five with with two walks and three strike outs.
Auburn posted a run in the top of the first to take the early lead which they held until the last inning. Lindsey Harrelson drew a one-out walk The next batter, Holly Currie hit a double to right-centerfield, Tanisha Milca had a hard time fielding the ball by the fence, and Harrelson scooted home easily. But on the play, Currie tried to leg out a triple, but a good relay from Milca-to-second-to-third cut her down by a stride.
Hawai`i will now take on DePaul (2-1) in the final game of Day Two of the OTWC Paradise Classic.
