HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (9-6) fell just short agasint the No. 12 Wichita State Shockers (8-2) 5-4 in the second game of the double-header at the Les Murakami Stadium Sunday.
Joshua Schneider (1-1) suffered his first loss of the season, allowing five runs on seven hits. Travis Banwart (2-1) got the win while Noah Krol picked up his third save of the year for the Shockers.
Evan Zimny continued to hit well on the day, going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Justin Frash added a 2-for-3 game with a triple while Kris Sanchez, Derek DuPree and Brandon Haislet added 2-for-5 games.
The Shockers jumped out 2-0 in the second inning, only to see Haislet score an unearned run in the bottom of the inning to cut the deficit back to 2-1. Wichita State came back with two runs in the third to get their advantage to 4-1.
After allowing another WSU run in the eighth, UH started their comeback. Zimny hit a two-run double to right to get it to 5-3. Hawai`i then got within a run in the ninth as Sanchez hit a RBI-single to center. But that was all the Rainbows would get, as a deep fly ball by Kevin Macdonald hung up just a bit too long, ending the game at 5-4. UH stranded two runners in the bottom of the ninth, leaving a total of 11 runners on base in the game.
The loss ended the series with the 'Bows being swept at home for the first time since the opening series of the 2004 season vs. Texas.
Hawai`i will next face Chicago State in a five-game series, starting on Thursday, Mar. 1, at 6:35 p.m.
