Wichmann, Murray Capture WAC Gold; UH Finishes Sixth

NAMPA, Idaho - University of Hawai'i women's track and field team captured two gold medals on the final day of the Western Athletic Conference Indoor Championship, Saturday, at Jackson's Track. As a team, the Rainbow Wahine placed sixth with a record 53.5 points.

Junior Annett Wichmann continued her dominance at WAC Championships, edging Cal State Northridge's Lashana Verdon to win the pentathlon. Wichmann, the nation's fourth-ranked pentathlete, totalled 3,830 points to Verdon's 3,783. In addition to her gold in the heptathlon at last year's WAC Outdoor Championship, she took home the silver medal in the pentathlon at the Indoor Championship.

Senior Novelle Murray repeated as champion in the weight toss. The Surrey, British Columbia native threw 63-3.25 to take top honors for the second consecutive year. Junior Meghan Weaver placed eighth at 54-5.25.

Senior Mallory Gilbert finished sixth in the pentathlon with a personal best 3,456 points, and in the process set new PRs in the 60-meter hurdles, high jump, long jump, and 800-meter run.

As a team, UH finished with its highest finish ever and most point total at the WAC Indoor Championship. Its previous high finish was last year with 52 points and seventh place. Cal State Northridge won the women's title, edging Louisiana Tech, 117.5 to 114.

After Friday's competition, UH stood in fourth place in the team standings after totalling 25.5 points mainly behind its dominant performance in the high jump. Emily Sheppard captured the gold medal while freshman Amber Kaufman and Gilbert also earned team points.
