PROVO, Utah - Fourth-ranked Brigham Young swept No. 12 Hawai`i tonight 35-33, 30-22, 30-27 in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's volleyball match at the Smith Fieldhouse.
BYU (11-4, 7-3) got double-digit kill outputs from Ivan Perez (15), Robby Stowell (13) and Yosleyder Cala (12) to knock off the Warriors for the second-straight night. Hawai`i falls to 3-11 overall and 3-9 in the MPSF.
UH got a solid showing from outside hitter Lauri Hakala who posted a team-high 14 kills while hitting at a .344 clip. The Warriors, as a team, hit only .134 with only Hakala hitting above .231.
In the first set, UH took a 2-1 lead on a Hakala kill and extended the margin to as much as 23-17. Then the Cougars mounted their comeback whittling the deficit down until tying it up at 27. BYU stavved off four set points until closing it out 35-33 winning the final three points.
It was BYU in Game 2. The Cougars led 11-10 then went on a 10-4 run before taking a 2-0 up lead with a 30-22 win.
The Warriors jumped out to a 5-2 advantage in Game 3 before BYU went on a 13-7 run and closed out the match 30-27.
BYU won all three phases of the match by out hitting (.315 to .134), out digging (39 to 20) and out blocking (14 to 10) UH.
Hawai`i returns to Honolulu to open up its longest home stand of the season beginning with the annual Alumni match Friday, March 2, with the Alumni facing off against one another at 4:00 p.m. followed by the feature match versus the varsity at 7:00 p.m. UH will then host Pepperdine (March 8 & 10), Cal State Northridge (March 16-17) and Lewis (March 23-24) in the next four weeks.
